Christmas Banner

Christmas 2012 at axis Ballymun

The first thing I thought when I saw all this was ‘oooh deadly’. As the Axis theatre is about a fifteen minute walk away from where I live, it’s the kind of place even if it’s bucketing down with snow in December, you’ll be able to go, have a bit of fun and know you’re going to get home ok. Add to that the exceptional events that take place in the Axis and you’re onto a winner.

Here’s what’s on this Christmas!

There will be a host of festive events at axis in the lead-up to Christmas this year. The line-up will include a classic romantic comedy, the National Chamber Choir, a Christmas market, Des Bishop and, for the season finale, Humpty Dumpty!

UNWRAPPED: CHRISTMAS ARTS MARKET Thursday 6th December

axis will be hosting their first ever arts market this Christmas, where artists get a chance to exhibit and sell their work. On the day there will be food, music, an opportunity to talk to the artists and savor the festive atmosphere.

Date Thursday 6th December
Time 10am – 9pm

COMEDY: DES BISHOP LIKES TO BANG Tuesday 11th December

Des Bishop is back, he likes to bang the drums, and he’s not afraid to show it. Combining his love of hip hop, strong jokes, audience participation and a newfound passion for drumming, Des has fun with wordplay in his brand new stand-up show. Bishop’s famously warm, honest presenting style and restless imagination will be in evidence again. Des has proved very popular amongst audiences in axis since he first piloted Joy in the Hood here in 2006.

Date Tuesday 11th December
Time 8pm
Tickets €20 (Christmas party dining packages from €25 up)

THE PICTURES: THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER Monday 17th December

For Christmas, The Pictures (axis’ film club for the over 55s) will be celebrating with seasonal classic The Shop Around the Corner. This 1940 American romantic comedy stars James Stewart & Margaret Sullavan, and is about two gift shop employees who can barely stand each other…not realizing they’re falling in love as anonymous correspondents through their letters.

The Pictures events are organized by Dublin City Arts Office and axis, in association with access>Cinema.
Date Monday 17th December
Screening time 2.30 pm
Price 2 euro members/ 4 euro non-members
Membership 3 euro

SING Tuesday 18th December

axis will again be offering local people the opportunity to workshop for eight weeks with singers from the National Chamber Choir of Ireland and perform alongside the choir in a special Christmas event at axis. (The project starts at the end of October.) Sing is in association with Dublin City Council Arts Office and the National Chamber Choir of Ireland.

Date Tuesday 18th December
Time 8pm
Tickets Free

HUMPTY DUMPTY 4th-27th January

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall??? Why?

So that Winne the Wicked Witch could gain control of the king’s kingdom. In the egg she placed a sprite, the Witch’s protégé. With his innocence and lack of knowledge she intends to rule the land. However, Humpty Dumpty is on hand to put a stop to her plans!

Another smash (geddit?!) pantomime from Holding Court Theatre Group featuring the King’s Housekeeper Martha Puff Puff and Ailfe from the Palace “The Scrubber” with dancing, singing and lots of fun.

Dates 4th-27th January
Times 2.30pm (Sat & Sun) and 7.30pm (Thurs and Fri)
Tickets 12/8 euro (All tickets for Thursday performances are 6euro)
