Martin McDonogh’s ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ opens at The Gaiety on May 12th. Directed by Joe Hill Gibbins and starring Rosaleen Lenehan, Derbhle Crotty, Frank Laverty and Johnny Ward, this has been described as ‘comic brilliance’ by The Daily Telegraph.
It’s also the Winner of The Evening Standard, Critics Circle and Writers Guild Award For Best New Play
What’s it about?
High in the Mountains of Galway live a lonely spinster Maureen and her devilishly manipulative mother Mag. Maureen longs for the romance that will spirit her away. But if she goes, who will stir the lumps of out of Mags Complan?
Martin McDonaghs work includes the Olivier Award-winning play The Pillowman, Oscar-winning film Six Shooter and the BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning hit In Bruges. The Beauty Queen of Leenane is directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins (The Glass Menagerie, Young Vic). Rosaleen Linehan (Neil Jordans The Butcher Boy, Dancing at Lughnasa, Broadway) reprises her highly acclaimed performance as Mag and is joined by Derbhle Crotty (Notes on a Scandal) as the long suffering Maureen. Derbhle most recently played Maimie to critical acclaim in John B Keanes The Field at the Olympia Theatre, directed by Joe Dowling earlier this year.
