Yesterday sawing the passing of John Forsythe, at the age of 92. He had a long career and according to most news sources was best known as Blake Carrington from Dynasty.
Not for me though, to me, He was and always will be ‘Charlie’.
Even though I was about 6 or 7 at the most, I was obsessed. I had to be in bed at 8. Full Stop. There was one night each week, a Tuesday, when I could stay up til 9. I waited for the words and then nothing could move me for an hour.
“Once upon a time, three little girls went to the police academy, two in Los Angeles and the other in San Francisco. They were each assigned very hazardous duties. But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me. My name is Charlie.”
I watched every episode of Charlie’s Angels but I did prefer them once Cheryl Ladd joined the fold as Jill Munroe’s (Farrah Fawcett-Majors) little sister Kris.
I had everything I could Charlie’s Angels-wise, I had dolls of Kris, Kelly and Sabrina, I found Kelly’s head in a decorative mug on the top of my wardrobe in my Mum’s house last week.
I had the 1979 annual ( which I found packed away with George Michael scrapbooks from my teens). I had cardboard cutouts of the exterior of the ‘Charles Townsend Detective Agency’. I had Charlie’s Angels cards which I can only compare to football or baseball cards. I even had a jigsaw.
When I was about 7 I also said I wanted to take the name “Kris” for my confirmation name cos that was Cheryl Ladd’s name in Charlie’s Angels. (think that could have been my first crush!).
Obsessed !! they were the coolest people on the planet and I wanted to be a Private Investigator cos they were. for some reason too, Sabrina wasn’t my favourite because in the opening credits she had to hold the gun with both hands to shoot it. Softy!
I still watch it! A couple of years ago they were showing all the episodes on cable at 8am every Saturday morning.. I watched them all on +1
Once Kate Jackson left, I think the series really started crumbling.. but hey it was good when it lasted!
