Competition: Win Tickets to David Turpin’s We Belong Dead at the Absolut Fringe Festival

webelongdeadposterLast week I was delighted to have had the honour of giving David Turpin’s new single ‘The Hotel’ it’s first airing on Culture Cafe, I also had a lovely chat with David which you can hear as part of last week’s Culture Cafe podcast, where he also speaks about his show ‘We Belong Dead’ which will be part theatre but full on concert.

Here’s the deets about the show:

After a year spent in the recording studio, acclaimed musician and artist David Turpin makes his live return at ABSOLUT Fringe 2012, with the one-off “ritual concert” We Belong Dead. Inviting the audience to sample the beauty and horror of a non-human world, We Belong Dead is an experimental song cycle dealing with the extinction of man and the return of the animal kingdom.

For one night only, the show will see Turpin joined by a stellar cast of new and regular collaborators, including chart-topping singer-songwriter Cathy Davey, acclaimed electronic musician HunterGatherer, and award-winning theatre artists Sorcha Kenny and Fiona Sheil.

Although the themes are dark, the music of We Belong Dead emphasises melody and the beauty of the human voice, while the presentation is infused with the “sinister glamour” that is Turpin’s calling card. Describing it as “Laurie Anderson meets Hans Christian Andersen”, Turpin promises the show will be “eerie, erotic, stark and surreal, but above all, an entertainment”.

The show, which is my only Irish date this year, is an extra-special once-off extravaganza promising ravishing never-before-heard melodies. How can one obtain tickets for this spooktacular? How can one not?! Tickets are available in person from the ABSOLUT Fringe Box Office on Curved Street, Temple Bar; over the telephone at 1850 374 643; and on the Internet at http://www.fringefest.com/programme/we-belong-dead.

Some interesting thing you may not know!

  • We Belong Dead comes almost exactly one year after David Turpin’s last live performance, a capacity show held in the Sculpture Hall of Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane as the headline event of the gallery’s Culture Night 2011 programme.
  • We Belong Dead marks the first time in recent years that David Turpin has not had an all-female band. Male conscripts to the performance are Hunter-Gatherer, Ivan St John and Dave McGuinness, lead singer of Lir.
  • In addition to their collaborative work on record, David Turpin is a part of Cathy Davey’s acclaimed series of “Songs That Scare Children” performances, the first of which won the Best in Spiegeltent award when it premiered at ABSOLUT Fringe 2008.
  • We Belong Dead is Turpin’s first specially conceived concert for a theatrical venue. His work for theatre to date includes two scores for the multi-award winning Liz Roche Company (formerly Rex Levitates), as well as a score for Maurice Joseph Kelliher’s Criminal Queers, a 2011 ABSOLUT Fringe hit, in which Turpin also appeared.
  • Theatre artists Fiona Sheil and Sorcha Kenny, who make a special appearance in We Belong Dead, previously appeared together in ANU Productions’ Laundry, winner of Best Production at the 2011 Irish Times Theatre Awards.
  • We Belong Dead prefigures an album of the same name, due for release internationally in 2013.
