netflixIt’s just over a month since Netflix launched here in Ireland giving everyone one month’s free access before starting to charge. I’ve got two days left in my free month and I’m not sure if I will subscribe. Netflix is a subscription based film and television streaming service, you can watch on demand and there are no limits to how much you watch.

My dilemma is this. There are not enough current or contemporary films included in their content. Since my free month began, I’ve watched a good few movies trying out the service. There have been a couple I hadn’t seen before. A lot of things that I would be interested in, I would have had on DVD anyway so these would be ruled out to watch, for me, online.

A lot of the content seems, please correct me if I’m wrong, to come from the 80s, 90s and 00s. An awful lot coming up in my recommended stream seem to be from 2000-2002. French movies, I like them, there’s eight on Netflix and some of those in my DVD collection. Continue reading »

thewomaninblackThe Harry Potter tag is going to hang around Daniel Radcliffe’s head for a well but here in The Woman In Black, he does a good job of moving away from the boy wizard.

The Woman In Black tells the tale of Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), a young widower and solicitor on the brink of losing his job as he tries to look after his four year old son. A last chance for Kipps to redeem himself at work means he must leave his son with a nanny while he travels out of London to a remote coastal village to sort a local woman’s last will and testament. On the train to his destination, he meets Daily, a wealthy village resident who becomes his ally in an otherwise superstition riddled place.

The Woman In Black is a remake of a TV movie based on a book, here the screenplay by Jonathan Ross’ missus, Jane Goldman, brings a good old fashioned ghost story to life. If you’re expecting an all out horrorthon you won’t get that. Director, James Watkins, has gone for an old fashioned distinct lack of CGI or flashy effects in the story rather using camera angles and sounds to build tension and anticipation. Continue reading »

shaveordyeNext Thursday and Friday, Today FM will run their Shave or Dye campaign for 2012. Last year when Shave or Dye was on, I spent the day in the chemo ward of the Mater Hospital with my sister, who I think was getting her second chemo session. Thank God, my little sis is ok.

I had thought about getting involved last year but decided to definitely get involved this year. So either next Thursday or Friday, I’ve been chosen to take part in this year’s Dyeing for Ireland. I’ll be getting my hair dyed either green, white or orange.

I would be delighted if you would sponsor me. I’m not asking for much, even 50 cent or one euro when put with other donations of one euro will all add up to a great amount. I have set up a mycharity.ie page, I will truly be forever grateful if you could donate.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I’ve notice lately than a lot of people listen to interviews on YouTube so I decided to give this interview with Demian Bichir a new leash of life and put it on youtube. Demian has been nominated for an Oscar for his role in A Better Life.

The-Artist-MoviePosterThis movie has been all over the media since Christmas and the hype around it, had made this movie out to be ‘definitely one you won’t want to miss’. The Artist, a silent movie in 2012, would it work? Maybe the hype had been built up too much.

I had been waiting to be blown away by this. The world of cinema has come a long way since Georges Méliès and The Lumiere Brothers. Surround sound and the option of 3D are commonplace, filling the senses with overloaded sound and imagery. The lack of dialogue in this film would need to be compensated through film action and direction.

The story revolves around George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) an actor who fears the arrival of the ‘Talkies’ and his possible popularity slide. His story is crossed with that of Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), a dancer/actress, Star in the making and her rise as the ‘Talkies’ take hold. Continue reading »

haywire posterIt’s always nice to see a movie set in your hometown, here part of Haywire was filmed in Dublin so getting to see a preview was going to be a treat.

As far as I can remember the only other time I’ve seen a film on opening night where it was set was Madonna’s The Next Best Thing, which was set in Santa Monica. The locals giggled as local bars and clubs came onscreen. In the Savoy for the preview of Haywire, similar happened but squeals of ‘Ooh Burger King’ didn’t seem as exotic.

Haywire is directed by Steven Soderbergh, yes he of Ocean’s Eleven fame and with a cast that includes, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas and of course, Gina Carano, you would expect a decent script to start with. Continue reading »

wondervillians ferrari Ferrari is the follow up to Wonder Villain’s debut Zola. Instead of tackling the world of soccer, this time WVs go for fast cars and this track has rapidly won me over, perhaps even more than Zola did.

The sickenly talented foursome from Derry have adapted a pop indie sound that is destined to win fans over. Uptempo with a driving synth bass line, this song will surely get the crowd going at many festivals this Summer. It’s catchy, quirky electro indie pop, glorious and delightful.. This is out on February 17th, I want to know when the album’s due.
