Darklight 2011: Strictly Roots – Talks and Discussions

darklight Darklight takes place in Dublin this year between 20th -22nd October. One of the things I love about it are the talks and discussions that go on over the weekend.

Here’s a look at what’s happening:

A symposium of workshops & discussions on the democratization of 3D techniques programmed by Gavin Kelly and Caroline Campbell.

Break-out topics including –

Mocap Hack Friday 21 October 2011, 3.45pm The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

Hosted by Gavin Kelly (Piranha Bar), Gavin will run a live experiment to hack the XBox Kinect into a motion capture for 3D animation.

Mocap Animate –The Making of ’The Last Train’ Friday 21 October 2011, 3.45pm The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

presented by Ben Harper, director at Giant Creative

An in-depth look at the production of Mocap Animate short film ‘The Last Train’. This workshop will look at the production techniques of the short film from the original concept through to post production.

Stereoscopic pipeline Friday 21 October 2011, 3.45pm The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

– camera to screen – for the first Irish 3D film with Sophie Merry and Sigmedia (TCD).

For the workshop Sigmedia will share the insights gained during the production and post-production of the live action material for Clockhead 3D, the first Irish 3d stereoscopic short.

DATA – DIY Light Graffiti Workshop by Recyclism Saturday 22 October 2011, 2.00pm, The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

Learn how to create a simple Light Painting Software with Max/Msp and build your own Light Spray Can by creating a simple circuit using a battery, LED and push button.

TOG Friday 21 October 2011, 3.45pm & Saturday 22 October 2011 All Day, The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

TOG will be creating a unique 2 day hardware hacking area at the upcoming darklight festival. LED displays , gas powered music visualizer (Rubens Tube), e-clothing and pin hole photography. Be amazed at the printing of 3D objects with our Makerbot. Be flashy by making one of our LED badges. Be thrilled by the heat of our infamous Ruben’s tube.

SFX UNPLUGGED Saturday 22 October 2011, 2.00pm, The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

Bellflower Workshop

Inspired by our trip to SWSX, we’ve invited Evan Glodell and Joel Hodge from Coatwolf Studios, producers of critically acclaimed Bellflower to come and talk about their extraordinary DIY special effects skills.

Shadow Puppetry workshop Saturday 22 October 2011, 11.00am, The Factory, Grand Canal Dock

Hosted by Daithi O’hEignigh & Yvonne Woods.

Daithi and Yvonne will make a short presentation on Shadow puppetry concentrating on its practical and artistic applications. The presentation will be followed by a workshop on how to make both elaborate and simple shadow puppetry stages (it’s possible to make a stage from an empty cereal box!) and the actual puppets themselves.
