FeverPitch at Croke Park

Fever_PitchLately it seems like the GAA have been looking MLB and NFL and how they run activities on match days, there have been stilt walkers and lifesize furry mascots getting photos taken with kids, music on match day and a chance to get your photo taken with either the Sam Maguire or the Liam McCarthy cups.

Now they are taking this one step further and having an evening of fun and entertainment the night before the All Ireland Football Final, September 17th.

Hector will act as MC on the night, there will be comedy from Neil Delamere and Fred Cooke and music on the night be be provided by Ryan Sheridan, Royseven and The Riptide Movement. The carnival feel will be pushed into overdrive by the latin rhythms of The Cuban Allstars. Tyrone legend Peter Canavan and memory man Jimmy Magee will there too, talking football.

Tickets are limited to 1400 and start at €35 and are available from crokepark.ie and gaa.ie

The Franchise: A Season With The San Francisco Giants Episode One

thefranchiseI love baseball! I got hooked when I spent a summer as an insomniac unable to sleep til 7am every morning. As San Francisco is such a fantastic place (yes I want to live there), I adopted the Giants. First thing I do every morning, if I haven’t seen or heard the previous night’s game, is check the result. Last night The Giants Beat LA 5-0. One of the horrible things about being over 5000 miles or 8170 kilometres from where your favourite sports team are is missing stuff like this on television. Thank goodness for the internet and for BWeezy’s beard!

Twenty Years Ago Today: Kevin Foley Became a Hero

Imagine, it was twenty years ago today when Kevin Foley scored a goal and David Beggy slotted over a point to end the now infamous Meath Vs Dublin saga of 1991. Over four games the two teams played for five hours and forty minutes and 237,000 people attended the games.

This was just a preliminary round game, Meath then drew with Wicklow, then beat Laois and Offaly in the Leinster Final. They played Roscommon in the All Ireland Semi but unfortunately lost to Down in the final – 1-16 to 1-14.

San Francisco Giants’ All Stars

all star giants - picture from sfgiants.comSan Francisco Giants. This year’s All Star Game takes place on July 12 at Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona, where as a side note, there is also a Gaelic Football Club.

Anyway, this year’s representatives from the Giants are all from the pitching staff and feature Brian Wilson (the ultimate sports star), Matt Cain (who I’m thrilled for, he’s amazing pitcher), Tim Lincecum (who is five years in the big leagues and an all star four times) and Ryan Vogelsong who will be at the game for the first time. He was brought into the Giant’s rotation went Barry Zito got injured.

He was originally a Giant between 2000-2001 and recently played in Japan.  It probably helps that Giants’  manager Bruce Bochy is the NL Team Manager for the All Star Game. YAY!

Moneyball Movie Trailer Released

The trailer for Moneyball has just been released. If you’re not a baseball fan, Moneyball is based on the book ‘Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game’ by Michael M. Lewis.

Brad Pitt plays Oakland Athletics’ manager Billy Beane who picks his by computer analysis rather than scouts, all cos the A’s are broke as he has to try keep the team going.

Seeing as Aaron Sorkin is involved this should be a great story for baseball and movie fans alike

San Francisco Giants Join It Gets Better

For the past few months there have been new anti homophobic bullying videos posted by both Irish and International organizations. Each one with the same message, we’re all the same, gay, straight bi, whatever.

I’m delighted to see that the San Francisco Giants have joined the ‘It Gets Better‘ project in the U.S. Professional sports is still an area where they’re aren’t many openly gay people.

Have a look!
