The London Ear on RTE 2XM // Show 174 with Thom Hickey

On today’s episode of The London Ear, I was delighted to be able to chat to author of one of my favourite blogs Thom Hickey. Thom is the man behind The Immortal Jukebox, a blog which looks at popular music from the 1920s right up to 1977. If you want to find out more about music or rediscover lost gems, this is the blog for you! Thom was born in London to Irish parents and grew up surrounded by Irish culture.

You can find Thom online on Twitter and of course, on his website ‘The Immortal Jukebox’.

On this week’s show, I was delighted to be able to catch up with Trick Mist. Gavin Murray has been a guest on The London Ear previously but recently returned to Ireland after living abroad for a number of years.

We had a really good chat about life back in Ireland, Gavin’s recent travels and the influence it had on his music and his current single, ‘Fraction’.

DJ Earworm United State of Pop 2017

As the days are counting down to 2018, DJ Earworm has just unveiled 2017’s United State of Pop. So how vintage was 2017’s year of pop for you? Maybe it’s because my co-worker has a thing about having Magic on 9-5 that I actually didn’t realise that some of these tunes were big enough to make this end of year mash up. Maybe I just missed them or maybe it’s because these are taken from Billboard’s end of year sales chart. Still think it’s hard to beat 2009’s classic mix.

Please excuse our appearance

Hey everyone, I’ve had some sort of a website malfunction, thanks to a server migration, which has taken a few days to get to the bottom of. Unfortunately, making sure the website is online has meant that it is currently not as pretty as I would like.

This is going to take me another few days to correct.

Thanks for your patience.

Tune of the Week // Corella – Say Something

There must be something in the water up north. From what I’ve been led to believe, ‘Up North’ is anywhere north of St Albans to Londoners. There has been a plethora of really good new bands coming out of Manchester and going on ‘Say Something’, Corella have put themselves at the top of the pile.

‘Say Something’ is the follow up to ‘Barcelona Girl’ from earlier this summer. I defy you not to dance. However, it will be inevitable. Funky guitar and drums and memorable refrains are the vital ingredients in this recipe. I’d put a tenner on that these guys have listened to Little Comets on more than one occasion.

Great song structure, musicality and vocal delivery all come together perfectly at exactly the right time for Corella. This is a huge delightful slice of indie pop. Definitely a band to watch out for in 2018.

The lads are playing the O2 Ritz Manchester on 14/12/17 and will be announcing a tour for Spring 2018 shortly.
